Steve

00:01:39:18 - 00:01:51:16
Jennifer
So we have with us today Samantha Eastman from Sup Pups, and she's here to talk to us a little about something with your dog. Thanks for being on the show today.

00:01:51:18 - 00:01:53:17
Samantha
Thanks for having me.

00:01:53:19 - 00:02:00:01
Jennifer
Of course. Of course. So can you tell us a little bit about what you do at Pups?

00:02:00:03 - 00:02:32:11
Samantha
Yeah. So when I started Pups, I mean, we've been doing it for nine years now in San Diego, and we just offer a structured way. And the and the best way on how to introduce your dog to a paddleboard without forcing them, without making a very traumatic experience, letting them out on the water and learning kind of what to do if certain things happen where like a boat might fly by you of your dog jumping in and just hanging.

00:02:32:13 - 00:02:46:19
Samantha
How to make it a really amazing experience for both of you, how you're going to want to do it again, and then we capture it for you. That's all included. Just because we want everyone to see how amazing they've done.

00:02:46:20 - 00:02:50:08
Steve
An overdose of them out on the water with their dog.

00:02:50:10 - 00:02:54:03
Samantha
Lots of animal videos, all included.

00:02:54:05 - 00:02:57:00
Steve
You can make some of your memory.

00:02:57:02 - 00:03:23:15
Samantha
Yeah. Yeah. I just. I don't. Yeah, I don't want anyone to bring their phone out. I don't want anyone to have to worry about it. Like, you're already kind of. You know, it's a lot to even just deal with your dog not calling him and things like that. And so and I provide all the photos and videos and then also kind of just more technique style when it comes to the sport of paddleboarding, you know.

00:03:23:16 - 00:03:55:12
Samantha
So I have some something that local dog photographer and I, we just come out on the paddleboard and take photos with you. And I'm like, no, like I'm actually going to teach you the club form and technique and terminology and how to use your entire body. Because a lot of my clients are a lot of women with dogs or even today I had a woman with a German Shepherd mix and it was like two German shepherd mixes and we got all three of them on the together, standing up in the way.

00:03:55:14 - 00:03:58:07
Steve
Paddling three of them on one board.

00:03:58:09 - 00:03:59:06
Samantha
Yes.

00:03:59:08 - 00:04:00:23
Steve
With the lady on the board too.

00:04:01:01 - 00:04:03:13
Samantha
Yeah. Yeah. I thought I said that photo.

00:04:03:15 - 00:04:05:16
Steve
Yeah. Yeah. I want to see that.

00:04:05:18 - 00:04:06:11
Samantha
Wow.

00:04:06:13 - 00:04:26:07
Steve
So I mean, that's amazing. Amazing company you have. I mean, that's like, you know, fetch the Sun were all about outdoor adventures with your dogs. And I think that's why, like, we resonate so well with your company. It's. It's so cool. I mean, how did you how did you get that started? Like, what gave you the idea to to do this?

00:04:26:09 - 00:04:48:18
Samantha
So growing up in Arizona, I had a very blessed childhood and we went to the lake every weekend in the summer. And I love being on the water outside. We pretty much did the boating life, the wait for the skiing and everything, and always knew that I wanted to live in San Diego and be on the water. And so I moved here.

00:04:48:18 - 00:05:10:06
Samantha
After college, I had a job. I was actually a jet ski provided, and then they had Paddleboards and this was now exactly ten years ago when I moved here. And I got on a paddle board. I wanted to start giving lessons and I was like, Wow, this is like my own little mini boat. Want to pay for a boat?

00:05:10:08 - 00:05:33:23
Samantha
I can go out in the water. And so I went and got certified to teach. And one day on my after I came to work and I brought my dog with me, I rescue dog. The name is Jack. He's 40 now and he's just wild. So by the hour, yeah, it was the most fabulous sunbathing operation. And they brought him out and he loved it.

00:05:33:23 - 00:05:55:07
Samantha
And I was like, And I've always been obsessed with dogs my entire life. And I'm like, Oh my God, we I can take one. I cook people with their dogs. And I got to know Goldie, too. And so it just kind of branched from there. And every time I get out on the water with a new dog, something would happen.

00:05:55:07 - 00:06:17:09
Samantha
I'm like, okay, what do I do to success or What can I do to make this better? And, you know, year by year? And then the word kept coming out of it and, you know, six years later, seven years later from now, I didn't realize that it would actually grow into such an amazing community here in San Diego, where I wanted to start branding out and doing events.

00:06:17:09 - 00:06:28:18
Samantha
And the best way to do that was make it my own little business. And so Jack and I opened up Pops officially as our own right before the pandemic.

00:06:28:18 - 00:06:33:04
Jennifer
But yeah, what a great idea for Young.

00:06:33:06 - 00:07:02:04
Samantha
And then from there, yeah, we made it through pandemic and it actually kind of was a blessing in disguise because I really want to adopt the dogs and you needed something to do outside that was socially distanced. And all these dogs have no died and separation or separation, right. So going back to work, it's a really cool thing to see people that are stuck inside now to get out and do something adventurous with their dog.

00:07:02:04 - 00:07:15:21
Steve
Yeah, Yeah. I mean, that's what Fetch The Sun's all about too, so. Yeah, So. Yeah. So how do you how would you go about contacting you and signing up for an a for a lesson?

00:07:15:23 - 00:07:42:21
Samantha
So with what we do, you know is there is kind of liability of running a business on the water with dogs because you know, a lot of people don't realize. But you know, if you are in an ocean water way, then there's, you know, oysters and rocks and things that are surrounding it. And so I have to have like a whole kind of online booking system to get everyone's information.

00:07:42:21 - 00:08:03:18
Samantha
And you have the liability waiver form. So best way is going on my website. And then you can pick the calendar the day and the time that you want to come out. That way. It makes it all private. So pretty much everything we do, all private lessons, unless you have friends or groups of people that want to come out or we can set up something like that.

00:08:03:20 - 00:08:21:01
Samantha
But majority, you know, if you come out private lesson, you know, it's just going to be you just my dog has me powered so he gets to hang out at home. So I just went up to one of my colleagues.

00:08:21:03 - 00:08:42:14
Samantha
Typically we just tried teach you everything you need to know about paddleboarding with your dog. You feel confident and comfortable, and then if you want to rent, we can set you up with our business partner, West Coast model sports to rent or it's going to get you on board. I will help you try to find the busboy, but you know, for storage, transporting, you know, the dogs way and so on.

00:08:42:14 - 00:08:44:09
Samantha
What's that you've all set up to go.

00:08:44:11 - 00:08:56:17
Steve
So if somebody does book a lesson with you, they they just have to show up with their dog, like they'll have the lifejacket for them. This paddleboard, they don't really have to bring their own equipment. You have everything for them.

00:08:56:19 - 00:09:17:04
Samantha
Yes. Yeah, everything is included. I even have dog treats. If you need pouches to put the dog treats in, I always say you should always have a life jacket on the dog no matter what. Because even if they're big, but if they fall in, how are you going to pick them up onto the board? You know, you want to have it in a safe way or I've had an owner with a smaller dog.

00:09:17:04 - 00:09:38:12
Samantha
They something happened and they both fell in and the owner accidently fell on top of their dog. And so I don't want to go on a lifejacket no matter what. And then a lot of people don't know in the state of California every human to have a life jacket as well. So even if you're on your own board and washing Bay or out somewhere else like that, you always have to have a life jacket.

00:09:38:12 - 00:09:53:15
Samantha
So, you know, I want everyone when they come, they're already nervous not knowing how this is going to go. So I just I don't need to worry about anything. So you sign up, everything's included. Just bring your dog and your smile. Wow.

00:09:53:16 - 00:10:20:02
Steve
So, yeah, you know, we have we have some listeners in San Diego, but we have a you know, our listeners are spread out throughout the United States. So if somebody was to travel with San Diego with their dog, they could technically sign up for your lesson and get out there. How many how many of those clients do you have, like people that are just kind of traveling here on vacation with their dogs, like tourists come in to sign up for lessons on summertime?

00:10:20:04 - 00:10:39:11
Samantha
A lot. You know, I just took out a couple from the Arizona. They were traveling here with a lot of people from Orange County that are traveling down. It's really awesome. A really cool website, you know, some people know about. It's called Bring Fido. Welcome.

00:10:39:14 - 00:10:40:21
Steve
We love Fido.

00:10:40:23 - 00:11:02:05
Samantha
Yeah. So you're traveling anyway, so I'm listed on Bring Fido. And it's just it's it's something different that you can do. And it's ultimate California experience to be on the water with your dog because the next step would be surfing, which, you know, that was the dominant factor. No one's going to take their dog out, so you don't know what you're doing.

00:11:02:06 - 00:11:31:00
Samantha
So but yeah, I know it's it's so much fun and everybody's so beautiful when we do that. And I would say, you know, don't but we're not going to best business. And you know, you don't know when you are when you want to come out, you know, I mean I can kind of give you some tips and tricks and, you know, I mean, a lot of it is is just not forcing the dog on and having someone there to help you do it because you just don't know what the dog's going to do.

00:11:31:00 - 00:11:40:12
Samantha
And I have some dogs that don't even want to get on to the paddleboard. And so, you know, treats and just small of treats. Yeah. So, yeah.

00:11:40:12 - 00:12:00:16
Jennifer
As far as experience, what about for the people's experience? Like what if you've never paddleboard before? Like would you be able to help them Like first timer's all the way up to like experienced paddleboarders where they have just as much fun and then like, what do you, how do you teach the people, I guess, to also paddleboard?

00:12:00:18 - 00:12:21:09
Samantha
Yeah, So when you meet me first, I go over everything you need to know. So like how to size up the paddle, how to get a straight turn stop and how to stand up. You know, I do get a lot of people that have never paddleboard before, and the first time is with their dog. And actually that's because I like that they're both experiencing it for the very first time together.

00:12:21:09 - 00:12:46:05
Samantha
And it's such an amazing body experience. And then I always joke with my clients, I'm like, it's called paddle boarding, not standard paddle boarding, because with with like what, hottest thing? And you really don't have to. And it's really just first it's like getting the dog comfortable and getting them safe and being more confident with you. When I can go to the best way to stand up and then my clients are really nervous.

00:12:46:06 - 00:13:21:23
Samantha
I'll take your dog. I'll take the dog on my word so you can practice standing up first. Then I'll transition the dog to you. And then if you're more of an experience other than you've never done with your dog, also compete and also competing potboiler racing probably needs to have a coach. And I have learned I've got a bunch of clinics with a bunch of pros that have visited San Diego and so I'm not certain I'm a pro, but ten years of paddling and competing in open ocean races and substituting and.

00:13:21:23 - 00:13:22:16
Steve
You're a pro and.

00:13:22:20 - 00:13:49:02
Samantha
I've definitely, you know, I'm I would love to take you guys out because you know, you get so many people are just so nervous. And I feel like when I make it more like a workout sometimes or if it is really windy, oh, some people don't realize that it is going to be a workout. So I'm like, Oh, so, you know, you signed up for a bootcamp class, but because you you are paddling and it is a sport.

00:13:49:07 - 00:14:12:02
Steve
So yeah, I've surf most of my life and the first time I had paddleboard, it thought there was just such a different experience, different muscles being used. You're not used to standing up all the time, which you know, you're doing a lot of a lot of these muscles that you're not used to balancing when you're out surfing because you're standing up for maybe if you're lucky, 15 seconds on the wave.

00:14:12:04 - 00:14:49:06
Samantha
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's fun. I feel very blessed to do what I do. And just the, you know, people overcome their fears are just them doubting their dog. Didn't think it would happen and they leave here and they're like, Oh my gosh, I had no idea this was going to work, you know? And I have dogs have three legs, too, you know, a blind dog or a deaf dog or you know, someone who got three dogs all together or the Humane Society or Depression or I'm awesome.

00:14:49:06 - 00:15:11:18
Samantha
It's just it's such a beautiful way to be active and get outside. But you're not, you know, being strenuous on your body. And it's also therapy, you know, blue water therapy. That's been my focus has became my therapy. Oh, yeah. I was just my clients, like, you're my therapist. Thank you so.

00:15:11:20 - 00:15:30:16
Jennifer
This is a great way to bond with your dog as well. Yeah, for sure. Is there any is there any kind of, like, maybe training or anything you would recommend for someone to do with their dog before coming out? Or is that really just kind of something you learn as you do it?

00:15:30:17 - 00:15:51:05
Samantha
Yeah, that is part of it and learn as you go. Know, some people also put a paddleboard in my my on my floor, in my house. I put my dog on the board. I'm like, you could wait when you go down to the water, those smells of other dogs and there's boats going by and there might be a jetski or just people like the environment.

00:15:51:06 - 00:16:10:07
Samantha
So yeah, so many other elements, those are just common. Do it. But if you had a very high energy dog, you might want to go run them around for a little bit, get some of that energy out. But sometimes those anxiety dogs, those crazy dogs, they're the ones that get on the board like.

00:16:10:09 - 00:16:11:22
Jennifer
And blow them out.

00:16:12:00 - 00:16:35:20
Samantha
And it's like, Oh, this is what I needed, you know? And it's kind of funny. So you never know. And I think just having someone who I've seen it all happen and I have, you know, every lesson for me is so different. And that's why I can I can work 12 hours on the water all day, because every lesson is so different, because every human is different.

00:16:35:22 - 00:16:42:06
Samantha
A dog has a different personality. So. Rob Wow.

00:16:42:08 - 00:16:43:00
Jennifer
That's great.

00:16:43:01 - 00:16:49:17
Steve
Right? Well, hey, Sam, thanks so much for being honest. Is there anything else you'd like to share?

00:16:49:19 - 00:17:18:10
Samantha
No, I just, you know, I. I want everyone to know and just don't limit your beliefs on what you can do and what you can accomplish in life. And I think if you want to do anything and you have someone there to help guide you and give you tips like you can surprise yourself, you know, in life is just people just get so locked in to their day to day lives where, you know, maybe like make a goal like once a month, go do something different and learn something new and when you can actually do it with your dog.

00:17:18:10 - 00:17:20:20
Steve
But even better, so much better.

00:17:20:22 - 00:17:24:14
Jennifer
Yeah, that's wonderful. I believe with that.

00:17:24:15 - 00:17:29:05
Samantha
Yeah, just kind of so much.

00:17:29:07 - 00:17:47:00
Steve
And we're going to put your website and your email and our show notes so our listeners where they want to get a hold of you, they can do that. Yeah. Highly, highly encourage our listeners to, to check out Sam Samantha and get out there on the water with your dog. It's an awesome, awesome experience.

00:17:47:02 - 00:17:49:21
Samantha
Thank you. And then you guys are coming out. We got to get you out.

00:17:49:23 - 00:17:50:19
Steve
Yeah, absolutely.

00:17:50:20 - 00:17:54:02
Jennifer
Definitely. We'll get out there soon.

00:17:54:04 - 00:17:55:10
Samantha
All right. Thank you.

00:17:55:12 - 00:18:17:18
Steve

00:19:34:03 - 00:19:38:08
Chef Roc
Steve It's a pleasure, my friend. Yeah, well, we have the same first name, so.

00:19:38:08 - 00:19:42:09
Steve
That's crazy, right? We're both. We both grew up in Connecticut, you know.

00:19:42:11 - 00:19:43:08
Chef Roc
Sure. We're not related.

00:19:43:09 - 00:19:44:08
Steve
Oh, maybe.

00:19:44:12 - 00:19:44:21
Chef Roc
Now.

00:19:44:21 - 00:19:45:11
Steve
Never know.

00:19:45:11 - 00:19:47:01
Chef Roc
You never know, Never know.

00:19:47:03 - 00:19:57:15
Steve
Hey. So, yeah, like I said, Steve's a celebrity chef. He's been cooking all over the world, literally. He's got lots of great recipes. So why is he on a dog podcast?

00:19:57:17 - 00:19:59:10
Chef Roc
Well, because I can bark.

00:19:59:12 - 00:20:00:13
Jennifer
Oh.

00:20:00:15 - 00:20:06:23
Steve
We actually got him on here to share with us a very tasty dog treat.

00:20:07:01 - 00:20:10:15
Chef Roc
You know, I've been cooking for humans most of my life.

00:20:10:17 - 00:20:12:01
Steve
We just got a new dog, right?

00:20:12:02 - 00:20:32:22
Chef Roc
I have a new dog. We don't give him any any human food because he's a little guy. He has a little sensitive stomach. So I started creating some items that that were human food that might work for my dog. So at least he's not stuck eating dry food or the same stuff over and over. I know I'd get bored.

00:20:32:23 - 00:20:38:10
Chef Roc
And I've been fortunate. I've been cooking on TV for 39 years.

00:20:38:15 - 00:20:39:09
Steve
Is that it?

00:20:39:09 - 00:20:48:19
Chef Roc
It? I don't. I know I don't. But I. Prior to that, my cooking career, which I am a true culinary and I have a degree in culinary arts.

00:20:48:19 - 00:20:50:12
Steve
from Johnson and Whales.

00:20:50:14 - 00:21:12:09
Chef Roc
Yeah, from Johnson and Whales! I went to school in Paris. Love Warren cooked under some incredible chefs there and in London. But I had some real cool jobs that brought me to see all types of food that's available out there. And I noticed that when I was in Paris. I was in Paris for like three months, going to school in the cafes.

00:21:12:09 - 00:21:23:02
Chef Roc
Everyone brought their dogs, everyone had a thing dog with them. I was like, That's crazy. There's a restaurant. But that's it's very much a dog friendly city.

00:21:23:02 - 00:21:24:13
Steve
The Parisians know how to love.

00:21:24:14 - 00:21:30:15
Chef Roc
We we we weren't just having the dog on the leash. They were feeding them.

00:21:30:17 - 00:21:31:05
Steve
Maybe they have a.

00:21:31:05 - 00:21:42:17
Chef Roc
Little bowl there and, you know, maybe a little, uh, you know, soup to pass on, you know, with the dog, with a biscuit. I ended up, like, thinking, okay, you know.

00:21:42:19 - 00:21:46:02
Steve
All our dogs are looking at us. They're all going to Paris.

00:21:46:02 - 00:22:26:16
Chef Roc
Oh, yeah. Let's go, Dad. So I need a visa. So I have doggie visa. So I ended up getting these ideas of how to create some food. That's good for you. Healthy, all natural, no GMO. You know, everything that people are looking for now and possibly plant based because I've created some products along my career that would use a little bit of a flavoring, you know, like some of my I mentioned my CBD products all have different flavors and I have some that are very unique, like ones that you would spray and it could be like blueberry or lemon.

00:22:26:18 - 00:22:28:22
Chef Roc
But I have a fried chicken one.

00:22:28:23 - 00:22:29:19
Steve
Wow.

00:22:29:21 - 00:22:40:02
Chef Roc
I have a chocolate glazed donut, pina colada, margarita, all different flavor profiles that are all natural. So I was thinking, okay, if I could.

00:22:40:03 - 00:22:41:03
Steve
Make me hungry.

00:22:41:03 - 00:22:44:10
Chef Roc
I know you want me to spray and spray.

00:22:44:14 - 00:22:46:18
Steve
Right now. Let's. Let's finish this podcast.

00:22:46:18 - 00:23:08:20
Chef Roc
You're full. So I started working on this because chicken is easy to work with, but you almost have to get it to the point where it's almost freeze dried that you can start with from the standpoint I don't want to put like freshly cooked chicken in unless it's a product that is a scoop of old dinner type item.

00:23:08:20 - 00:23:23:09
Chef Roc
But I was looking for more for like a snack, something that you can have. So dehydration is a really cool process of removing all the liquid or 90% of the liquid, 95% of liquid out of whatever you dehydrate.

00:23:23:09 - 00:23:29:18
Steve
And you could get those. They're fairly cheap now. You could go right and go to the store. It's on Amazon and you get a dehydrator.

00:23:29:18 - 00:23:45:06
Chef Roc
I know where they can go right now. Where nobody lower income, nobody lower. And then look up the chef rock collection. I haven't a dehydrator on there. Now granted, when I came out here, it wasn't even in my head that I was going to pitch this. Yeah, but it's really cool.

00:23:45:06 - 00:23:48:01
Steve
So give me give me the. Give me the site. Yeah, we'll put that in.

00:23:48:01 - 00:24:17:17
Chef Roc
Nobody dot overcome and I have some pots and pans on there too. But the hydrator is something that, you know, it's inexpensive and you can dehydrate anything you know besides fruits and vegetables, any kind of, you know, like jerky, you know, or chicken fish even. So once you get that dehydration level down, then it's a little safer to keep around for a while, even though I would probably keep it in an airtight container in the fridge.

00:24:17:19 - 00:24:26:12
Chef Roc
So the chicken could be just little chunks of chicken dehydrated because we give our our little doggy liver dry freeze dried liver stuff.

00:24:26:13 - 00:24:27:23
Steve
Yeah, we know.

00:24:27:23 - 00:24:28:20
Chef Roc
They love it.

00:24:28:22 - 00:24:35:10
Steve
So, Jennifer, you used to use the freeze dried liver in training, right? Yeah. Yes, we call that a high quality treat.

00:24:35:10 - 00:24:43:00
Jennifer
Yes, it was a high quality reward that the dogs would definitely want to work for. So, yeah, we definitely use that in training a lot.

00:24:43:02 - 00:24:44:07
Steve
And it's pretty expensive.

00:24:44:07 - 00:24:44:21
Jennifer
Motivating.

00:24:44:22 - 00:24:45:05
Chef Roc
Yeah, it.

00:24:45:05 - 00:24:46:05
Steve
Is very expensive.

00:24:46:05 - 00:25:07:16
Chef Roc
So it's like if you lose, you lose a lot of volume when you remove the liquid out of anything. Yeah. You know, that's why if you ever go to a fancy steak restaurant and you got a 45 day old rib eye, you pay a fortune for it because it's removing some of the liquid out of that steak and it makes it more compact flavor wise, profile wise.

00:25:07:16 - 00:25:28:05
Chef Roc
It's awesome, but it's a lot more expensive because you're going to lose, you know, maybe 20, 30% of the weight of a normal steak. Same thing with chicken or anything like that. So those snacks do get expensive. So I was thinking more of using that dehydrated process, taking the chicken and then adding some other ingredients to it and then drying those out.

00:25:28:05 - 00:25:41:02
Chef Roc
So if you had some kale and, you know, some other ingredients, some carrots, and maybe even if they're Italian dog, a little garlic long legged over there, you know.

00:25:41:04 - 00:25:42:06
Steve
You you.

00:25:42:08 - 00:25:45:00
Chef Roc
Snoop. You like that. He likes that idea. And he goes, I'm.

00:25:45:00 - 00:25:46:02
Steve
First he said, go make me.

00:25:46:02 - 00:25:49:23
Chef Roc
Some. Oh, come on, let me tell me you're going to make the dogs. I'm not.

00:25:50:01 - 00:25:54:02
Steve
Eyeballing you. You're talking about the recipe. So with that.

00:25:54:02 - 00:26:02:00
Chef Roc
Process, you can go and you can make like a biscuit and then break it up almost like a some crackle. You know.

00:26:02:02 - 00:26:03:15
Steve
You don't need any refrigeration.

00:26:03:17 - 00:26:06:22
Chef Roc
You don't really do, you know, you know, we keep the liver snaps in a little air tight.

00:26:06:22 - 00:26:16:21
Steve
So so as we talked about stand up paddling with your dog in this episode, perfect, perfect reward for a perfect snack to bring out with you.

00:26:16:21 - 00:26:23:11
Chef Roc
And I like that. So when I get the first test batch, I'll bring them over here because you got enough dogs here to give you different opinions.

00:26:23:17 - 00:26:24:14
Jennifer
Oh, yeah.

00:26:24:16 - 00:26:27:13
Steve
Yeah. Oh, my dogs. See anything? They're not picky.

00:26:27:15 - 00:26:44:18
Chef Roc
Yeah, my dog likes anything. Our dog is like a mockingbird. Every time I look missing a sack, a pen, he'll once I went, my wife's my bag. Her, her, her bag and pulled out her glasses.

00:26:44:20 - 00:26:47:07
Steve
But you know you didn't you and dating.

00:26:47:08 - 00:26:56:07
Chef Roc
No, he just left them in the in his little by his bed and I'm like the heck I go this way. Why are your glasses by the dog's bed.

00:26:56:08 - 00:26:56:17
Steve
Why.

00:26:56:23 - 00:27:01:23
Chef Roc
Those were in my purse. He went in there so he's like a little klepto. You know?

00:27:02:01 - 00:27:02:23
Steve
Yeah. It's, it's.

00:27:03:01 - 00:27:06:12
Chef Roc
He does a lot of things that he gets treats for, so he's. He's really good at it.

00:27:06:12 - 00:27:21:11
Steve
It's funny, if you look at, like, all of our kids socks, they all have little holes in them because, you know, their kids, they leave them all over the place. And this one here, Snoopy loves to take the socks and the newest addition to our pack, Chewbacca. Chewie For sure.

00:27:21:11 - 00:27:22:22
Chef Roc
To me, because very.

00:27:22:22 - 00:27:24:21
Jennifer
Appropriate, does love to chill.

00:27:24:23 - 00:27:30:05
Steve
They just sit there and chew up the socks, man. And it's I tell the kids, put it away. Put them in your hamper for a minute. Ever.

00:27:30:05 - 00:27:45:19
Chef Roc
And yeah, it's an, it's an amazing thing, especially when you can give them a treat and they're just so excited to get it. So if you can give them something healthy, I'm all you know, I don't always eat healthy, but I think your animals should because you're they're depending on you.

00:27:45:19 - 00:27:47:03
Steve
Oh, absolutely. Yeah.

00:27:47:05 - 00:27:59:20
Chef Roc
They don't have a choice. You know, I think I'll have the fish, too. No, no, no, no. I think you're having whatever I think we give you. So I think that the animals, to me are more important than people.

00:27:59:22 - 00:28:15:03
Steve
Because I know and it's your right and I love that idea, that dehydrator, because it just it really lets you change up their their food. Also, it's like, you know, you buy you buy a bag of dog food. It's all one flavor all.

00:28:15:05 - 00:28:17:09
Chef Roc
And then you got to go through that £25 bag.

00:28:17:09 - 00:28:27:16
Steve
Yeah, salmon n potato. And they're going to have that for the next month, month and a half, where if you could dehydrate some chicken, some salmon, maybe some.

00:28:27:18 - 00:28:32:18
Chef Roc
You know, anything, even the vegetable veggie, any money they would go crazy for.

00:28:32:20 - 00:28:35:13
Steve
Did you ever try freeze drying?

00:28:35:15 - 00:28:40:12
Chef Roc
You know, the freeze dried process. It's a whole nother animal because you have to have different equipment.

00:28:40:12 - 00:28:52:04
Steve
Oh, man. There's a lot of equipment that goes along with for freeze drying. I know they're pretty big machines. You get them for your house, but pretty pricey, bulky. I mean, you got to have like an oil pump for them.

00:28:52:04 - 00:29:06:09
Chef Roc
And this is what you can do, though. You can get that finish freeze dried product and grind it up and add it as an ingredient. If you were going to make like a biscuit type item that was, you know, maybe a whole wheat base.

00:29:06:13 - 00:29:13:10
Steve
Yeah. So let's say I, I got some like dehydrated carrots and dehydrated chicken and I want to make a biscuit. How do I do that?

00:29:13:15 - 00:29:36:00
Chef Roc
I would actually make get a good biscuit recipe, kind of like a cookie recipe, that hard cookie. And you can take those ingredients, whether it's your vegetables, your chicken or fish, whatever combination you want to make. And put it into, you might have to buy a separate one. Or if you have one of those little food processors, I like the, believe it or not, a coffee grinder.

00:29:36:02 - 00:29:37:17
Steve
Okay. And you have one of those.

00:29:37:17 - 00:29:54:18
Chef Roc
And if you got a clean one, you know, like even better just for this part, you put it in there and it grinds it up to almost a powder. Then you can mix it in there. Snelson You're incorporating the chicken or the fish or the beef or the pork, whatever you made dehydrated and they sell everything you can get.

00:29:54:18 - 00:30:19:05
Chef Roc
Everything freeze dried. You know, you can get it like RCI. The best place I don't know if it's still the same place where they sell all the camping gear. Yeah. You know, the dehydrated foods. So you go there and you go, Oh, my gosh, that's beef stew, you know, just got air water. But if you're using it for a flavor profile and put a balance of protein in there or the.

00:30:19:05 - 00:30:24:03
Steve
Vegetables, but I mean, you can achieve the same effect with a dehydrated. Yeah. Piece of meat.

00:30:24:03 - 00:30:38:15
Chef Roc
Yeah, you could you could just grind it up and then add that into the biscuit and then you can form like, like a sheet pan of cookies almost, and bake and let them get hard and break them up. Like with the livers that we snap in a little pieces.

00:30:38:15 - 00:30:40:14
Jennifer
So use them as treats.

00:30:40:16 - 00:30:41:11
Steve
Yeah.

00:30:41:13 - 00:30:44:11
Chef Roc
So you're just going to spend all that money on all that other stuff because.

00:30:44:13 - 00:30:52:02
Steve
Own just say if you do use a coffee grinder, make sure you clean or feel like, Hey, what was my coffee? Tastes like chicken.

00:30:52:02 - 00:30:53:05
Chef Roc
Why is it dog out for?

00:30:53:09 - 00:30:58:07
Jennifer
Yeah, definitely be for it. Because then you're like, Why so much energy?

00:30:58:09 - 00:31:24:13
Chef Roc
Like the old joke? My leg fell asleep during the day and I hope it's not up all night. That's an actual Stephen Wright joke. That's one of his deadpan jokes. But I always feel that anything that you can make for your dog that's special, like those little livers, he goes nuts when he sees us. Grab the container and you'll do little swirls for us and stand on his back legs and dance for us.

00:31:24:15 - 00:31:41:18
Chef Roc
You know, we haven't gotten him to do the dishes yet, but we're working almost there. We're working on that part. But I mean, to me, the dog is just as important as any member of your family. And why not give them some of these treats that are good for them.

00:31:41:20 - 00:31:44:02
Steve
And it mixes things up? Do you know part.

00:31:44:02 - 00:31:45:02
Chef Roc
Of life, you know.

00:31:45:02 - 00:31:48:00
Steve
Boring, eating the same thing, you know, day after day.

00:31:48:01 - 00:32:10:17
Chef Roc
So it's fun to talk about, hey, you know what? I can make this for the dog and I will make them and I will get you guys over some batches because I really think that the transition remember when it was just dry food for dogs and that was it. Now also and they have the refrigerated sections and so and places like that in even in the grocery store as I see it.

00:32:10:18 - 00:32:29:08
Chef Roc
And you can go in there and you can get, you know, some products that are you know, they're moist. So you they they have to be refrigerated and those aren't snacks. So those are meals. So I think the treat and is is wide open. You know, I mean I like like you said, the dogs are going they're starting to get a little Yeah.

00:32:29:10 - 00:32:30:19
Chef Roc
They hear treat they hear that.

00:32:30:19 - 00:32:32:19
Steve
Word here and they want treat.

00:32:32:21 - 00:32:36:18
Chef Roc
They know they know they're going I know she's got them in her pocket.

00:32:36:19 - 00:33:01:04
Steve
Yeah. And if you know, if you guys have been listening to our podcast for a while and reading our blog, you'll notice in everything we talk about hiking, surfing, running, we always say, bring plenty of water for you and your dog and also bring some snacks or food for them. And Steve, I think this is an amazing thing to throw in that treat pouch when you go hiking, go out to the beach, go running with your dog, kind of keep a little, little some of these in your pocket.

00:33:01:04 - 00:33:03:05
Steve
Give keep that energy going.

00:33:03:07 - 00:33:13:15
Chef Roc
So this is my challenge. Okay, I'm on this podcast and within a month I will come back again and I'll tell you and then we'll share the recipe where people can make them at home.

00:33:13:17 - 00:33:14:07
Steve
Sounds good.

00:33:14:07 - 00:33:18:14
Chef Roc
Unless you feel like making them and selling them as a new product line.

00:33:18:16 - 00:33:19:19
Steve
No, not yet.

00:33:19:19 - 00:33:23:03
Chef Roc
Not yet. Okay. So we'll make them just for for us.

00:33:23:06 - 00:33:24:01
Steve
All right.

00:33:24:03 - 00:33:28:04
Chef Roc
The heck with everybody else now will make and we'll try them out. And do I.

00:33:28:04 - 00:33:29:00
Steve
Get to have one two?

00:33:29:05 - 00:33:30:19
Chef Roc
Oh, yeah. That's the best part.

00:33:30:20 - 00:33:32:13
Steve
But we're going to make room. Have Jennifer try one.

00:33:32:13 - 00:33:35:05
Chef Roc
There's nothing in there that what's she's, you know, stays alive.

00:33:35:05 - 00:33:38:15
Steve
For about 10 minutes. And while you go first.

00:33:38:17 - 00:33:54:23
Chef Roc
Go ahead. You know, I'll have to spice it up a little bit for that. You know, I know the dogs don't care anyway, do they? My dog would eat anything off the floor. Yeah. If I dropped anything is not complaining going. That was a little spicy. No, I don't think so.

00:33:55:01 - 00:34:23:23
Steve
Okay. So, Steve, you just recently returned from Poland, right? Where you at? The World Kitchen Cooking for Ukrainian refugees. Amazing work, by the way. That was so incredible. You going out there. And I know, you know, we in the dog rescue world, we saw a lot coming out from from dogs kind of I mean, you know, it's unfortunate, but, you know, a lot of dogs were left behind, abandoned in place because people are fleeing country for their lives.

00:34:24:01 - 00:34:30:05
Steve
When you were over in that area, did you have any interaction with the folks doing the animal rescue?

00:34:30:07 - 00:34:46:16
Chef Roc
Yes, I did. You know, I was over in a little town of Shimla. I can never pronounce it correctly. So I was over there for a month working in World Central Kitchen. It was like 60 chefs, and we were working 12 hour shifts and we're pumping out like 67,000 meals a day. I'm really impressed.

00:34:46:16 - 00:34:50:13
Steve
Seeing some of the photos coming out. Like, Yeah, lines and lines of sandwiches.

00:34:50:13 - 00:35:17:05
Chef Roc
I mean, yeah, like 8000 pages a day. And what was the the interesting part was at night the train would come in at 9:00 from all points in the Ukraine and it was, it was 99% women and children. And they were like, this is a year ago. So they were they were for the most part on the run.

00:35:17:07 - 00:35:23:16
Chef Roc
Some of them had animals with them, but I know a lot of dogs and cats got stuck back.

00:35:23:16 - 00:35:24:03
Steve
Behind.

00:35:24:03 - 00:35:48:09
Chef Roc
Especially with the areas like Kharkiv at that time. At the beginning of the war, it was only like a third month was getting bombed constantly. So we did run into a couple from Israel that were going over every day because I was three miles from the border and going across every day collecting dogs and cats and bringing them back to this little town.

00:35:48:11 - 00:36:01:14
Chef Roc
This little town's not that little, you know, I mean, it it's a real small town, relatively speaking, but 4 million people cross that border from February through probably April.

00:36:01:16 - 00:36:06:02
Steve
And such a huge number. It's it's hard to fathom. Yeah.

00:36:06:04 - 00:36:26:14
Chef Roc
So when we'd go there at night at 9:00, the trains would come in and it was just packed with people. And some of them haven't eaten in 24 hours or water, you know, they had like a little garbage bag full of their belongings. And I did see people with, with some dogs, but for the most part they got left behind.

00:36:26:16 - 00:36:41:02
Chef Roc
And it's amazing that Israeli couple, they were part of an NGO there that was sort of they had different types of services. One was going over there. I don't know where they kept them after that because that was a lot a lot of animals. They were.

00:36:41:02 - 00:36:58:09
Steve
Around. We had quite a few rescue organizations throughout the United States and even some here in San Diego that were kind of going into Poland and doing countries and airlifting those those dogs out and bringing them back to shelters here. So but that's that's incredible. This couple was just kind of going in there in harm's way.

00:36:58:09 - 00:37:17:07
Chef Roc
And but it's amazing the people that stepped up, the Polish people were unbelievable when all those folks came across, they had their homes opened up for them. And then World Central Kitchen, there's just another miracle right there whose chef, Jose, set this kitchen up?

00:37:17:09 - 00:37:43:20
Steve
Yeah, Chef Jose Andre is right. And yeah, he's got that that organization. He's with World Central Kitchen. Amazing organization. They provide basically meals, food for people in disaster areas. And in our show notes, I'll put the link in their courage. You guys check them out. Really, really great organization, doing lots of good work around the world.

00:37:43:22 - 00:38:10:11
Chef Roc
It's it's I'm totally blown away. You know, the humanity of of these folks and how they gave and gave and gave and still give. It's an impressive group, but there's a lot of support still here in San Diego. You know, the house of Ukraine over in Balboa Park, they raise not just money, but they also taking clothes and they send stuff over.

00:38:10:11 - 00:38:14:10
Chef Roc
And they're all a bunch of folks that have family over there still.

00:38:14:12 - 00:38:21:05
Steve
Well, hey, Steve, thanks so much again for joining us. I know you're busy. Guy got a we kind of went a little over your time here. I apologize for that.

00:38:21:05 - 00:38:22:04
Chef Roc
That's okay, my friend.

00:38:22:04 - 00:38:32:01
Steve
But no, thanks for thanks for joining us and sharing some wisdom about, you know, these these amazing doggy treats. I'm just going to pull out a dehydrator and try some of this.

00:38:32:03 - 00:38:32:21
